UE Category and LTE Capable Device Stats

Category information is used to allow the eNB to communicate effectively with all the UEs connected to it.


The ue-Category defines a combined uplink and downlink capability as specified in 3GPP TS36.306.


There are 8,623 LTE user devices including frequency and operator variants from 569 suppliers verified in GSA’s database (GAMBoD).


This is over 53% higher than the number of devices GSA reported in June 2016; the number of suppliers grew 25% in the same period.

LTE / 3G fallback support

  • 91% of all LTE devices can operate on a 3G technology, with the breakdown as follows:
  • 7,080 devices (82.1%) can operate on either HSPA/HSPA+/DC-HSPA+ or 3C-HSPA+
  • 5,242 devices (60.8%) support DC-HSPA+
  • 1,277 devices (14.8%) support TD-SCDMA
  • 1,259 devices (14.6%) support EV-DO


99% of LTE phones are multimode/3G capable

  • 69.9% of LTE phones support DC-HSPA+


91.9% of LTE tablets are multimode/3G capable

  • 45% of LTE tablets support DC-HSPA+


VoLTE User Devices : 1,313 VoLTE-capable devices including carrier and frequency variants.

1800 MHz: largest ecosystem
1800 MHz is the most popular spectrum for LTE deployments, used in approaching 50% of commercially launched LTE networks globally.

LTE in 450 MHz band (LTE450)
3GPP band 31 devices (452.5 - 457.5 MHz / 462.5 - 467.5 MHz) are included in GSA’s tracking. 61 LTE450 devices have been announced.

LTE TDD devices
Bands 40 (2.3 GHz) and 38 (2.6 GHz) have the largest choice of TDD terminals with bands 39 and 41 also being mature.
